The TCM treatment method for Chronic nephritis mainly bases on two points as treating oedema if there is oedema, treating consumption if there is not oedema.

Warming-tonifying spleen-kidney and promoting blood circulation method: this method applies on deficiency of spleen-kidney yang, indications generally including whole body edema, distention and fullness in abdomen, aversion to cold, fatigue, soreness pain in lumbar region, large amount of albuminuria being found via urinary test, ordinarily appears lower plasma albumen, hypercholesterolemia or inversion of rate between albumin and globulin. The author often uses Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Fu Zi, Mao Gen Tang and with modification. Prescription: Hong Shen 6g (or Dang Shen 30g), Huang Qi 30g, Mao Gen 60g, Dan Fu Zi 10g, Chuan Xiong 15g, Yi Mu Cao 30g, Da Huang 3g, Chi Shao 30g, Bai Zhu 10g, Dong Gua Pi 30g. Performing transfusion of human blood albumin when necessary, 10g per time, 1 time every half month, using it continuously for 2-3 times, strengthening resistibility in order to eliminate immune pathogenic factors. So as to treat glomeruli harmness caused by dysfunction of kidney occurring reversible change.

Reinforcing the middle qi, preserving essential qi, promoting blood circulation method: it applies to patient with deficiency of spleen and weakness of qi, indications generally including pale face, edema of face and four limbs, fatigue, severe palpitation, poor appetite, soreness on lumbar and knee regions, pale lips and tongue, thready and deep pulse, there is a little albumen, red blood cell and cast in urine, kidney function test may find abnormity. The author usually uses the Middle-Reinforcing and Qi-Benefiting Decoction with modification. Prescription: Huang Qi 30g, Dang Shen 20g, Bai Zhu 30g, Fu Ling 15g, Chuan Xiong 6g, Shu Di Huang 9g, Chen Pi 10g, Ze Xie 10g, Shan Yao 20g, Dang Gui 10g, Chi Shao 10g, Jin Ying Zi 15g.

Nourishing liver-kidney and promoting blood circulation method: it applies on chronic nephritis with deficiency of liver-kidney yin type, indications generally including edema of face, dizziness, feverish sensation in the five centers, soreness and weakness in lumber region and knees, tinnitus, red tongue with a little coating, thready, taut and rapid pulse, there is albumen in the urine, blood pressure ascending, it should be good to nourish liver-kidney, soothe the liver and subdue yang, we may use Rehmannia with Wolfberry and Chrysanthemum decoction and Drink of Gastrodia and Uncaria with modification. Prescription: Tian Ma 10g, Gou Teng 10g, Niu Xi 12g, Dang Gui 10g, Xia Ku Cao 12g, Gou Qi Zi 12g, Shan Zhu Yu 10g, Chi Shao 10g, Yi Mu Cao 30g, Nu Zhen Zi 12g, Dan Pi 10g, Ze Xie 12g.
