Treatment of Vascular Dementia given by TCM [1]

Location of vascular dementia is in the brain with the type of primary deficiency and secondary excess. It is mainly caused by liver blood and kidney essence deficiency, marrow insufficiency, blood stagnation, retention of phlegm, obstruction of clear orifice by wind and fire. Treatment principle is to tonify kidney and activate blood. Prescription is modification of Zuo Gui Wan. Add Chuan Lian Zi [3], Zhi Zi [4], Ju Hua [5], Huang Qin [6] for fire caused by liver qi stagnation; add Du Zhong [7], Ba Ji Tian [8], Gou Ji [9] for kidney yang deficiency; add Huang Qin, Bai Zhu [10], Shan Yao [11], Da Zao [12] fore qi deficiency; add Ban Xia [13], Chen Pi [14], Zhu Li for retention of phlegm; add Yuan Zhi [15], Suan Zao Ren [16], Hu Po [17], Ye Jiao Teng for emotional change; add Yu Jin [18], Fo Shou [19], Zhi Shi [20] for depression; add Chuan Xiong [21], Chi Shao [22], Dan Shen [23], Tao Ren [24], Hong Hua [25], Shui Zhi [26], Di Long [27] for blood stagnation. Vascular dementia mostly occurs after wind stroke, so acupuncture and massage treatment can be combined, and it is important for patient to continue the follow up treatments.
