136 Cases of Sciatica Treated by Combination Chinese Herbs and Acupuncture [1]

There are 136 cases in this group, the youngest is 20 year's old and the eldest is 64 years old; the shortest disease course is 6 days and the longest is 5 years. The basic principle is warming meridians, dispelling coldness, eliminating dampness, relieving pain, activating blood and eliminating stasis. Treatment: herbs: Zhi Nan Xing, Bai Zhi [3], Huang Bai [4], Chuan Xiong [5], Qiang Huo [6], Du Huo [7], Cang Zu, Wei Ling Xian [8], Fang Ji [9], Xuan Hu, Chuan Niu Xi [10], Gui Zhi [11], Tao Ren [12] and Hong Hua [13]. One dose a day and be decocted. Take it twice a day. One course is 14 days. Add Quan Xie [14] and Jiang Can [15] for numbness of muscle; add Mu Gua [16] for limitation of flexion and extension; add Mu Zhong and Chuan Duan for lumbago.

Acupuncture: Huantiao (GB30 ) [17], Yinmen (BL37) [18], Yanglingquan (GB34) He-Sea Point, Influential Point of Tendon [19], Chengshan (BL57) [20] and Xuanzhong (GB39) Influential Point of the Marrow [21], apply for reducing method. Once a day at the early stage treatment; as the syndromes getting better, do it every other day or every other two days. The warming acupuncture method can be used in winter.

Results: the total effect is 93.38%. No recurrence during a follow-up of one year in the recovered group.
