Nei Jing

The Emperor asked: “What things are advantageous and pernicious to the four seas? How do they cause a man to survive or to fail to survive?”

Qi Bo answered: “Compliance causes one to survive and incompliance causes one to fail to survive. Knowing how to make adjustment is advantageous and not knowing is pernicious.”

The Emperor asked: “What about the compliance and incompliance of the four seas?”

Qi Bo answered: “If the sea of qi is surplus, the qi will be full in the chest, and a man will feel his chest stuffy and have a red face. If the sea of qi is deficient, he will have less speaking. If the sea of blood is surplus, a man will always feel his body big and not be able to feel his hidden chronic diseases. If the sea of blood is deficient, he will feel his body small and not be able to feel his hidden chronic diseases too. If the sea of water and grains is surplus, a man will feel his abdomen full. If the sea of water and grains is deficient, he will have no desire for food, even in hunger. If the sea of marrow is surplus, a man will be more sinewy and agile. If the sea of marrow is deficient, he will have dizziness, tinnitus, weary limbs, blindness, listlessness, and drowsiness.”
