3 FUNCTIONS
- To release the exterior symptoms and disperse cold;
- To promote the flow of qi in the spleen and stomach;
- To alleviate fish and crab poisoning.
4 INDICATIONS
- Wind-cold type of common cold manifested as fever, chills, headache, nasal obstruction and cough. Perilla leaf (Zi Su Ye [3]) is used with Fresh ginger (Sheng Jiang [4]), Tangerine peel (Chen Pi [5]), Cyperus tuber (Xiang Fu [6]) and Apricot seed (Xing Ren [7]) in the formula Xing Su San.
- Qi stagnation in the spleen and stomach manifested as nausea, vomiting and fullness sensation in the chest or abdomen. Perilla leaf (Zisuye) is used with Agastache (Huo Xiang [8]) for cold manifestations. If there are more heat signs, Perilla leaf(Zisuye) can be prescribed with Coptis root (Huang Lian [9]). For cases with qi stagnation and accumulation of phlegm, Perilla leaf (Zisuye) is used with Pinellia tuber (Ban Xia [10]) and Magnolia bark (Hou Po [11]). For vomiting during pregnancy, Perilla leaf (Zisuye) is used with Tangerine peel (Chenpi) and Amomum fruit (Sha Ren [12]).
- Fish and card poisoning manifested as vomiting, Diarrhea [13] and abdominal pain. Perilla leaf (Zisuye) is used with Fresh ginger (Shengjiang) and Dahurian angelica root (Bai Zhi [14]).
