The Functions on Left Heart Failure Treated with Warming Yang and Promoting Water [1]

1. Deficiency of  heart qi
It is common seen in slight heart dysfunction patients. This type shows palpitation, short breath, spontaneous perspiration, more serious after movement or exhaust, fatigue, or pale complexion, pale tongue coating, thin and yellow tongue coating, flabby tongue with tooth mark, deficiency and rapid pulse. Apply the prescriptions as follows: Hong Shen (stewed separately), Huang Qi [3], raw Long Gu [4], Raw Mu Li [5], Fu Ling [6], Long Yan Rou [7] and Gui Zhi [8].

2. Deficiency of heart and kidney yang, internal retain of water and damp
It is common seen in chronic left heart dysfunction patients and the manifestations are: palpitation, short breath, no desire to speak, tasteless mouth or dry mouth, preference of hot drinks, short breath gets more serous if moving, white and thin sputum, paroxysmal dyspnoea at night. Apply the prescriptions as follows: Hong Shen (stewed separately), Bei Huang Qi, Gui Zhi, prepared Gan Cao [9], Long Gu, Mu Li, Fu Ling and Ze Xie [10].

3. Deficiency of heart and kidney yang, internal retain of water and damp followed with yin deficiency
It is common seen in left heart dysfunction patients caused by hypertension, and these patients are superficial of liver yang because of yin deficiency. Because of the mutual generation relationship between liver and heart, liver disease hurts heart and develops to deficiency of heart and kidney yang, and besides deficiency of heart and kidney yang syndromes, the manifestations are mouth dry, irritability, afternoon fever, light red or dry and scanty tongue coating, thready, rapid pulse. The prescriptions: Gui Zhi, Bai Shao [11], Long Gu, Mu Li, Tai Zi Shen [12], Mai Dong, Wu Wei Zi [13], Huai Niu Xi [14] and Ze Xie.

4. Collapse of kidney yang, water-qi superinverse to heart and lung
 This type is the critical symptoms of left heart failure and pulmonary edema and manifests as: asthma, restlessness, diaphoresis, unable prostration, cough with white or red frothy sputum, coldness of four limbs and delirious, etc. prescriptions: Fu Zi [15], Gui Zhi, Bai Shao, Long Gu, Mu Li, prepared Gan Cao, Hong Shen (stewed separately), Zhe Shi and Gan Jiang [16].
