1 TASTE

Kidney, urinary bladder and large intestine


3 FUNCTIONS
1.To clear heat and dry dampness; 2.To reduce fire and release toxins


4 INDICATIONS
1.Damp-heat syndrome: a) damp-heat accumulated in intestines manifested as Diarrhea [3] and dysentery-phellodendron bark (Huang Bai [4]) is used with Pulsatilla root (Bai Tou Weng [5]), Coptis root (Huang Lian [6]) and Scutellaria root (Huang Qin [7]); b) internal accumulation of damp-heat manifested as jaundice-phellodendron bark (Huangbai) is used with Capejasmine (Zhi Zi [8]) and Oriental wormwood (Yin Chen Hao [9]); c) down-ward flowing of damp-heat, turbid urination and yellow, thick leukorrhea-Phellodendron bark (Huangbai) is used with Plantain seed (che-qianzi), Bamboo leaf (Zhu Ye [10]) and Clematis stem (Mu Tong [11]); d) boils caused by dampness in the lower part of the body-Phellodendron bark (Huangbai) is used with Atractylodes rhizome (Cang Zhu [12]).2.General boils, carbuncles, furuncles and eczema. Phellodendron bark(Huangbai) is used with Scutellaria root (Huangqin) and Capejas-mine (Zhizi). For external use, Phellodendron bark (Huangbai) is pounded into a powder mixed with Talc (Hua Shi [13]).3.Deficiency7 lf yin with heat manifested as noturnal emissions and night sweating. Phellodendron bark (Huangbai) is used with Anemar-rhena rhizome (Zhi Mu [14]) and Fresh rehmannia root (Sheng Di Huang [15]).

3-10 g


6 COUTIONS
This herb is contraindicated in cases with weakness and cold in the spleen and stomach.
