Regional Anatomy:
The layer structures of the needle insertion are the same as those in Jizhong (GV6) [3] (GV 6).
In the superficial layer, there are the medial branches of the posterior branches of the 8th cervical nerve and the subcutaneous venous plexus between the adjacent spinous processes. In the layer, there are the external (posterior) vertebral venous plexus between the adjacent spinous processes and the branches of the posterior branches of the 7th cervical nerve.

Location:
Lie prostrate or sit upright with one's head lowered; on the lower side of the 7th cervical vertebra at the highest point of the projections of the nuchal region which can flex, extend and rotate.
Function:
Clearing away heat and toxic material, relieving the exterior syndrome and activating yang, tranquilizing the mind, and keeping the lung-qi pure and descendant.

Indications:
Neck pain and rigidity, malaria, febrile diseases, epilepsy, afternoon fever, cough, asthma, common cold, and back stiffness.

Insert the needle obliquely to upward 0.5-1 cun depth; needling response: local numbness and distention, radiating upward and downward; moxibustion: using 3-10 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 20 min.
Note:
Deep puncture should be avoided. The needle would penetrate the yellow ligament ( the interarcuate ligament )-the epidural space of vertebral canal-the dura mater of spinal cord-the subdural space-the spinal subarachnoid space-the spinal pia mater-the spinal cord by its tip and injure the spinal cord when it inserted perpendicularly to a depth of 1.5 cun.
