Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutaneous tissue-between lateral and muscle heads of gastrocnemius muscle.
In the superficial layer, there is the posterior femoral cutaneous nerve and the small saphenous vein. In the deep layer, there are the tibial nerve, the popliteal artery and vein, and the peroneal artery.
Location:
Lie pronely; at the midpoint of the popliteal transverse stria, between tendons of two muscles ( musculus biceps femoris and musculus semitendinosus).
Function:
Relaxing the muscles and tendons and activating the flow of qi and blood in the channels and collaterals, regaining consciousness and purging away the heat, removing heat from the blood and toxic material from the body, and strengthening the loins and knee.
Indications:
Backache, rheumatic gonarthritis, sciatica, cerebral apoplexy and its sequelae, epilepsy, enteritis, abdominal pain, enuresis, uroschesis, hemorrhoid, malaria, and eczema.
Prescription:
Combined use with GeshuBL17 (Geshu (BL17) [3]) for treatment of erysipelas; with DazhuiGV14 (Dazhui (GV14) [4]) for treatment of furuncles in the neck and back region; with Tianzong (SI11) [5] (Tianzong (SI11) [6]) for treatment of mastitis; with YinbaiSP1 (Yinbai(SP1) Jing-Well Point [7]) for the treatment of apostaxis; and with XialianLI8 (Xialian (LI8) [8]) for treatment of arthralgia due towind-dampness.
Methods:
Insert the needle perpendicularly, 1-1.5 cun deep; needling response: local numbness and distension, radiating toward the foot; moxibustion:using 3-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 10 min.
