Dr Huiqin Mou’s Experience on Treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis [1]

Rheumatoid arthritis is caused by the attacking of wind-cold-wetness evil when there is the deficiency of body Ying-Wei, Qi and blood deficiency, and liver kidney deficit. During the acute attacking phases of rheumatoid arthritis, there are wind, cold, wetness state of evil dominate the body, in the chronic remission stage, the disease locates inside, vital Qi is weak, or deficient vital Qi leads to lingering of pathogen. In the acute stages, three evils wind-cold-wetness have different proportion, if there is more wind evil, the treatment focuses on eliminating wind, the herbs used have features of pungent-sweet-slight warm and can prevent wind, combining with herbs of dispersing cold and removing wetness, pulsing herbs of reinforcing blood and activating blood circulation, such as Bai Shao [3], Dang Gui [4], Chuan Xiong [5]. If there is more cold evil, the treatment focuses on dispersing cold, according to patients’ level of vital Qi, we choose Wu Tou, Fu Zi [6] and Xi Xin [7] 10-15g respectively to prevent cold blockage, decoct 30 minutes first in boiling water, Wu Tou, Fu Zi and Xi Xin’s toxicity will be eliminated greatly. If there is more wetness evil, we should use bland herbs eliminating wetness, aromatic herbs resolving wetness, Dr Mou apply Fu Ling [8], Yi Yi Ren [9], Huo Xiang [10] etc. mostly, the herbs to dry the wetness should be used cautiously, such as Qiang Huo [11], Du Huo [12], Wei Ling Xian [13] etc., as herbs with features of pungency and dry may harm the tendons and vessels, lead to fluid deficiency although the wetness is removed, which influences the recover of the joints functions, additionally, the herbs of eliminating wind and dispersing cold, regulating spleen and reinforcing Qi will be used.

Rheumatoid arthritis chronic remission stage, Dr Mou pays much attention to protecting spleen and stomach Qi, use large dose of Bai Zhu [14], Cang Zhu [15], raw Shan Yao [16], fry Mai Ya [17], Bai Bian Tou, Gan Jiang [18] etc., apply large dose of herbs with functions of nourishing Qi and promoting liver, such as Huang Qi [19], Dang Shen [20], Bei Sha Shen [21], Dang Gui, Bai Shao etc., for instance, use Huang Qi 100g, the herbs to reinforcing kidney and replenishing essence should be employed, such as Lu Jiao Shuang, A Jiao, Zi He Che etc.
