Differentiation and Treatment of Cancer Given by TCM [1]

Treatment principle of cancer in early stage is mainly to eliminate pathogenic factors and subsidiary to strengthen anti-pathogenic qi; treatment principle of cancer in medium stage is both to eliminate pathogenic factors and strengthen anti-pathogenic qi at same degree; principle of cancer in late stage is mainly strengthen anti-pathogenic qi and subsidiary eliminate pathogenic factors.

1: Qi deficiency
Cancer in early stage manifests decreased function of digestion; herbs get functions to strengthen anti-pathogenic qi and promote immunity function of body, reduce side effects of western drugs, tonify qi and promote spleen. Ingredients have Ren Shen [3], Huang Qi [4], Bai Zhu [5], Fu Ling [6], Shan Yao [7] etc.
2: Blood deficiency
Side effects of chemical and radial therapies can heavily disturb hematopoiesis and cause bone marrow suppression such as decreased RBC and WBC in large amount etc. Treatment principle is to strengthen anti-pathogenic qi as quick as possible. Herbs with functions to tonify blood and nourish yin have E Jiao [8], Shu Di Huang [9], Dang Gui [10], Bai Shao [11], Long Yan Rou [12], He Shou Wu [13], Zi He Che, Gou Ji [14] Zi, N? Zhen Zi, ji Xue Teng [15], Bie Jia [16], Gui Jia, Huang Jing [17], Yu Zhu [18], Tian Dong, Mai Dong etc.
3: Qi and blood stagnation
Cancer is worsen because diagnosis and treatment are not on time. Treatment principle is to regulate qi and activate blood, soften hardness and stop stasis, improve nutrition status of microcirculation and oxygen supply, then relieve pain. Herbs with function to regulate qi have Hou Po [19], Chen Pi [20], Xiang Fu [21], Sha Ren [22], Mu Xiang [23], Yan Hu Suo [24], Chai Hu [25]; herbs with function to activate blood and eliminate stasis have Dan Shen [26], Chuan Xiong [27], Tao Ren [28], Hong Hua [29], San Leng [30], E Zhu [31], Wu Ling Zhi, Pu Huang [32]; herbs with function to soften hardness have Chuan Shan Jia [33] Duan Mu Li [34], Shan Ci Gu, Hai Zao [35], Kun Bu [36], Huang Yao Zi etc.
4: Yang deficiency
Cancer in late stage has severe spleen and kidney yang deficiency. Herbs with function to tonify qi have Ren Shen, Huang Qi, Bai Zhu, Fu Ling; herbs with function to warm up kidney have Lu Rong [37], Rou Gui [38], Yin Yang Huo [39], Rou Cong Rong [40], Bu Gu Zhi [41], Ba Ji Tian [42] etc; herbs with function to nourish kidney yin have Shan Zhu Yu [43], shu Di Huang, Gou Ji Zi, Tu Si Zi [44] etc to promote immunity function, relieve symptoms and prolong life.
