Both qi and yin deficiency: dry mouth, short breathing, lassitude, poor appetite, abdominal distention, soreness and weakness on the limbs, loose stool or dry stool, low fever, easily common cold, flabby and tender tongue with no coating, superficial pulse or weak pulse when press harder. Treatment principles are to nourish qi and yin. Basic prescription includes Dang Shen [3], Huang Qin [4], Sheng Di Huang [5], Shi Hu [6], Bai Zhu [7], Bai Shao [8], Shan Yao [9], Nan Bei Sha Shen [10], Mai Dong, Tian Dong, Mu Dan Pi [11], Gou Ji [12] Zi, Bian Dou [13], Xian Mao [14], Yin Yang Huo [15], Gan Cao [16].
4. Obstruction of collateral by blood stagnation: Thin body, fixed pain in the joint with even deformity, dry mouth with cough, dry stool, purplish tongue with scanty coating, deep, short and hesitant pulse. Treatment principles are to activate blood, nourish blood and harmonize collaterals. The primary etiology of this type is liver and kidney yin deficiency leading to heat, heat burning body fluid and causing blood stagnation in the collaterals. Prescriptions are modification on Dan Zhi Xiao Yao San and Tao Ren [17] Si Wu Tang or Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang.
