Differentiation and Treatment of Dry Syndrome given by TCM (Part I) [1]

Western medicine has not cured method to treat dry syndrome, only relieves symptoms. In recent years, herbal medicine is effective to treat dry syndrome. The differentiation and treatment are in the following:
1. Deficiency of lung and stomach fluid: fever, continuous dry cough, dry mouth with thirst, dry lip, dry skin, scanty or no sweating, soreness, pain, swollen and distention in the joints, red tongue with scanty coating, thready and hesitant or thready and rapid pulse. Treatment principles are to moisten and nourish lung and stomach. Prescription includes Sheng Di Huang [3], Shi Hu [4], Shan Yao [5], Gou Ji [6] Zi, Shan Zhu Yu [7], Bai Shao [8], Mai Dong, Tian Dong, Nan Sha Shen [9], Bei Sha Shen, Tian Hua Fen [10], Tai Zi Shen [11], Ju Hua [12], Bai He [13] with sweetish taste and cold nature.
2. Liver and kidney yin deficiency: dry eyes with scanty or no tears, foreign body sensation in the eyes, burning sensation or itching or pain in the eyes, red eyes, twitching of eyelids, dizziness, tinnitus, soreness and pain on the low back, dull pain in the joints, red tongue with scanty coating, deep, thready and hesitant or rapid pulse. Treatment principles are to nourish liver and kidney yin, moisten eyes and ear. Prescription is modification on Qi Ju Di Huang Wan, Da Bu Yin Wan, Zuo Gui Wan, Er Zhi Wan and Yi Guan Jian.
