Chinese Medicine Classic / Nei Jin [2]

The spirit in eyes and the five colors on the complexion show how qi blooms. A healthy red complexion is like cinnabar wrapped in white silk, while an unhealthy red complexion resembles hematite. The healthy white complexion resembles goose feathers, while the unhealthy white complexion is like salt. The healthy cyan complexion is like the gloss of jade, while the unhealthy cyan complexion is flat like blue paint. The healthy yellow complexion resembles realgar wrapped in silk, while the unhealthy yellow complexion resembles yellow soil. The healthy black complexion is lustrous like heavy lacquer, while the unhealthy black complexion is like gloomy dark soil. If the genuine colors of the five zang-organs are exposed, the patient’s life will not be long. When we talk about the spirit in eyes, a person who is under good health can see everything clear, can divide black and white color, can identify long and short. If the vision is abnormal, the person cannot divide long and short, cannot distinguish black and white, it means his/her spirit qi is weaken already.
