Triple Energizer (San Jiao) Meridian

Regional Anatomy:
Skin-subcutsneous tissue-between sternocleidomastoid muscle and trapezius muscle-splenius muscle of head and neck-semispinal muscle of the head and neck.
In the superficial layer, there are the tributaries of the external jugular vein, the great auricular nerve and the lesser occipital nerve. In the deep layer, there are the branches or tributaries of the occipiral artery and vein, and the ascending branches of the deep cervical artery and vein.


Location:
Upright sitting; on the same level with the angle of mandible, and on the posterior border of sternocleidomastoid muscle.
Function:
Refreshing the mind, and clearing and activating the channels and collaterals.


Indications:
Tinnitus, deafness, optic neuritis, laryngitis, spasm of neck and nape, congestive eyeball, and puffiness of the face.


Prescription:
Combined use with TinghuiGB2 (Tinghui (GB2)) for treatment of tinnitus, and deafness; with HouxiSI3 (Houxi (SI3) Shu-Stream Point, The Eight Confluent Point) for treatment of occipital neuralgia; with QuepenST12 (Quepen (ST12)), ShendaoGV11 (Shendao (GV11)), DazhuBL11 (Dazhu (BL11) Influential point of bone), TiantuCV22 (Tiantu (CV22)), ShuidaoST28 (Shuidao (ST28)), and JuguLI16(Jugu (LI16)) for treatment of pain in the shoulder and arms.


Methods:
Insert the needle perpendicularly, 0.5-1 cun deep; needling response: local numbness and distension, radiating toward the vertex; moxibustion: using 2-5 moxa-cones, or mild moxibustion for 10 min.
