Nei Jing

The east produces wind. The wind promotes the wood qi. The wood qi generates sour flavor. The sour flavor nourishes the liver. The liver governs the sinews. The liver promote the heart (wood generate fire) and dominate the eyes. To the heaven, the changes of yin and yang are mysterious and abstruse. To the earth, the changes generate everything. Just because of these changes, the five flavors are generated. Man’s wisdom is promoted, and the mystical nature of the universe is produced.

The wind in the heaven, wood in the earth, sinews in the body, liver in the zang organs, cyan in colors, jiao in musical scales, shout in sounds, cramp in diseases, eyes in the orifices, sourness in flavors, and anger in mood are all corresponding.

Anger damages the liver, but sorrow can overcome anger. Wind harms the sinews, but dryness can overcome wind (metal control wood). Sourness impairs the sinews, but acridness can overcome sourness (metal control wood).
