Chronic rhinitis is generally characterized by nasal obstruction, nasal discharge, dysosmia, and dizziness. 75 cases of chronic rhinitis have been treated by acupuncture with satisfactory therapeutic results in two years. 41 cases among the 75 were classified by syndrome differentiation as cold type, 24 of the cases were classified as heat type, and the other 10 cases were classified as deficiency and cold type.

Treatment: Fengchi (GB20) and Tongtian (BL7) were adopted alternately for acupuncture for the cold type and for the deficiency plus cold type. The needles were first inserted shallowly to induce the needling sensation, after that slowly pressure in to obtain a warm feeling for dispeling wind and cold and opening up the nasal orifice. For the heat type, Hegu (LI4) Yuan-Source Point and Quchi (LI11) He-Sea Point were selected; the needles were inserted to the proper depth to induce the needling sensation, after that slowly withdrawn to obtain a cold feeling to dispel wind and heat and to open up the nasal orifice. Fengmen (BL12) and Feishu (BL13) were added for moxibustion in cold type to dispel wind and cold, and to replenish the lung as adjuvant acupoints. Yin Tang and Shangxing (GV23) were added alternately for bloodletting for heat type as adjuvant acupoints. For the deficiency and cold type, Dazhui (GV14) and BL13 were added for moxibustion to warm up and enhance the resistance of lung. The treatment was administered once every other day with 10 sessions constituting one course.

Results: For short-term effects, 30 cases were cured, 15 cases were markedly improved with clinical symptoms essentially relieved, and 30 cases were improved, with clinical symptoms alleviated. For long-term therapeutic effects, the follow-up letter enquiries were made one year after treatment, 9 patients responded, including 6 cases of cure, 2 cases improvement, and one case of relapse.
